James Johnson – Life on the Outside
Visitors to The Gibberd Garden are invited to drop in to the White Room Gallery, situated in the The Gibberd Rooms, the original home of Sir Frederick and Lady Pat Gibberd.
Open every Sunday from 2pm until close afternoons, until the end of October. Come and view this delightful exhibition staged by artist and woodsman James Johnson.
Most of the paintings are for sale, and James will be on hand to talk about his work and the landscapes that have inspired him. Below, James explains what has motivated him in his art for the last two years.
About the Artist
Jame Johnson is a local artist, currently living between Harlow and Suffolk where he works as a Forest Surveyor.
James has been creative with paint since school, but in the last few years feels that he’s really found what sparks his passion for painting. Inspired by landscapes, the outdoors, impressionism and expressionism. Acrylics are his current preferred choice of medium.
Life on the Outside is a culmination of a project over the last couple of years that has now come to an end. It is a record of his journey into the world of forestry, which began when he started his forestry apprenticeship at the end of 2020 in the Chiltern Hills. For the last five years he has lived and worked seasonally with the YHA, walked the country and generally been outside a lot, which is where his main inspiration comes from.
James says, ‘the project initially started as snapping pictures for my apprenticeship portfolio, as I had to keep a record of my progress. In the photos I could see potential for good painting material and I liked that there were occasionally forestry workers captured in the moment, a sight that not many people come across. I’ve displayed this work together on the main exhibition wall.
Other works are from 2019 onwards, from various locations around the UK.
